Gardermoen Oslo Airport
The Gardermoen International Airport and the Gardermoen Oslo Airport refer to the same international airport found in Gardermoen, Ullensaker in Norway. Right now the Gardermoen International Airport is the major airport for international travel between Norway and other countries. Gardermoen Oslo Airport has two runways, with carriers Norwegian Air Shuttle and Scandinavian Airlines using the airport as their aviation hub. Gardermoen International Airport is believed to be showing the most growth among airports in Nordic countries. In 2006, it had an estimated 17.7 million travelers passing through its portals for a 1.8 million jump from 2005 numbers. The biggest European duty free shop can be found at this airport because Norway hasn’t joined the European Union yet and isn’t bound by restrictions on duty free products.
Problems with fog and ice
Though Gardermoen International Airport is still growing, it has to contend with recurring problems with fog and ice that affect aviation safety. Sometimes the airport has to completely shut down to avoid any aviation accidents due to these problems with fog and ice. To complicate the problems of Gardermoen International Airport, they cannot use deicing fluids much for fear of tainting the underground water systems of the city called the Trandum delta. Gardermoen International Airport has even experimented with use of infrared heat within vast hangars to conduct deicing but the technique proved ineffective. Discussions are underway regarding the feasibility of further expanding the airport’s capacity due to travel demands of passengers. Airport capacity should max out at 20 million in a few years’ time.
